DEREC'S ARTIST'S STATEMENT: Growing up in Burlington, North Carolina, he painted and sold his first portrait commission at the age of 14. His first boyhood love of horses led to many early equine studies in charcoal and in oil. He continued both his equestrian and art studies at Averett College in Danville, Virginia in the late 1970's. After graduation from Randolph Community College in 1985, he began his work in murals. Painting on such a large scale subtly refined his impressionistic style with greater vibrancy and romanticism. Using a wide range of influences, as well as his own unique personal insights, his work exhibits a sometimes playful, yet very romantic study in contrast and subject matter. Large and colorful studies of distinctly Southern figures are often exhibited beside quiet and dream-like landscapes that are full of movement and direction. His large, almost surrealistic style of still life painting exhibits the same mysterious beauty in the contrasts of both color and light, while at the same time, it appears both soft and serene. Today, his work in both oil and acrylic is collected throughout the East Coast and shown in New York, Charleston, South Carolina and Greensboro, North Carolina. He is quoted as saying, "I have enjoyed and benefited from my education and experience, but I have to give God the credit and thank Him for giving me a talent and ability to do something that creates such pleasure and satisfaction for others to enjoy." His studio, a historic Spanish Colonial Revival building in Greensboro's Fisher Park area, is used for local art shows and private appointments throughout the year. Derec lives in a renovated historic lodge beside his studio with his wife Doreen and his black Labrador, Angus.
