CINDY'S

      ARTIST STATEMENT:

I have a passion for interesting old houses and ancient architecture.  Wherever I travel I find that people's homes express their personalities better than clothes, or cars, or any other possession.  I especially loved the pride I found in Irish villages where postage stamp sized rows houses, with Lilliputian sized gardens are lovingly manicured and maticulously maintained.

My first love, however, is portrait work.  In part because natural light striking the figure has traditionally been symbolic of the light of truth.  The main reason, however, is the thrill I feel every time I draw or paint someone's eyes and there comes the moment when they actually appear to be looking back at me.  I hope to communicate life behind the obvious...the vulnerability, the need for security that one might miss with just a casual glance.

Though I've had a driving need to draw since childhood, I have only come to embrace it as my profession recently.  I took my first drawing class when I was well into my 40's.  Fortunately, I connected with a teacher who is an award winning artist exhibiting nationally, and who excels in figurative work and watercolor.  I won two talent grants while studying art, followed by an award at a juried show.  Recently, a large figurative piece done in pastels with three dimintional cloth was chosen as one of only twenty nine artists' works to be shown at the Human Form Exhibit at the Visual Arts Center in Newport, OR.

I'd love to draw or paint what is special to you.  Whether it be human, pet or home...or have you consider having a vision from an Irish village or Oregon town to enhance your home.
