OSTRICH EGG / CHICKEN EGG Size Comparison:
Each beautiful "Ivory" Ostrich Egg Shell has been hand carved by Marcella. She buys these rare and unique egg shells from a farm here in the USA and from a coop of ostrich farmers in South Africa. They were pre-blown and sanitized, then shipped to her studio. Marcella designs a picture or pattern of art on the Ostrich Egg Shell, then ever so carefully relief carves it, with the inner painted gold layer revealed in some areas. The naturally beautiful Ostrich Egg has a thick ivory colored uniform shell, which makes it ideal for these relief carvings, using this thickness into the design of each unique egg. After all, it has to be thick and strong enough to hold the 300 lb. momma bird that laid this wonderful egg! It takes several hours of intense work with high speed drills, diamond bits, under special lighting, wearing a dust mask and running a special ventilation system, to complete the artwork you now see before you, but as you can see it was worth it! It does become fragile after much of the egg has been carved away. Marcella then sprays each piece with a UV protective acrylic varnish, which also helps when cleaning or maintaining your egg. If displayed out of a cover, your egg should be occasionally washed to prevent any dust build-up. While gently holding your egg in your hands, place it under running water then pat off excess moisture with soft cloth, and allow to air dry. Very interesting and rare conversational fine-art piece!
