* ARTICLES* LETTER - FROM A CIRCUS EMPLOYEE ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY- SEPT 22nd!!!!! ************ ************ ************
NAME AND CAUSE OF DEATH:
Kenya 18 F 02/00 Intestinal problems Mona, she was crippled during training as a baby, then fell out of the truck twice and could no longer stand.
Tuo (murdered for his tusks and teeth)
Many unnamed Amboseli babies who have died, too.
***One of Carson and Barnes
elephants, Amy, was at Cuneo's breeding facility during 93-94, maybe
longer...does anyone know what became of her? Did she produce a new performer
for them or what?
Amy was sent to Hawthorn Corporation with Jenny. They were best friend, completely attached like Jenny and Shirley. In fact, Carson and Barnes Circus sent Jenny and Amy to Cuneo for breeding because when they traveled with the circus they would run away every time they were taken off chains. As soon as the two arrived at Hawthorn Amy got pregnant. One year later Jenny was permanently crippled and sold to King Royal Circus. Sally LaTorres was herd manager at the time and recommended against moving Jenny because she and Amy were so attached to each other. Her concern was for Amy, who was approximately 10 months pregnant. Sally felt that if Jenny left Amy would be so stressed that she might miscarry. Her warning was ignored and shortly after Jenny left, Amy did miscarry. The miscarriage resulted in a prolapsed uterus which drug on the dirty concrete floor for weeks until she was euthanized. Yet another unbelievable truth about John Cuneo.
***Dolly was a newly acquired elephant
at Carson and Barnes, in 1994. She was small, dark, arthritic and had one eye
that hung lower than the other. I was told that she had had a tragic life,
including nearly drowning and more than one truck accident. It took her
several minutes just to get out of the truck and to step over the picket lines
to be chained. She was 'insane' and would swing blindly at whoever walked by,
and she would end up hitting the side of the trailer instead with a big
bang! Her assigned handler, an idiot named Danny Barnes, was actually talking
about making her a ride elephant!! My question is, is anybody here familiar
with the current lineup of elephants at C&B, and would know any info on Dolly?
She was an elephant in need of being retired...badly - Tosti
***I remember one of C&Bs elephants
getting a urinary infection and having bloody urine. They were taking handfuls
of an antibiotic in a bag with a horse on the cover, and putting it on her
food. I don't remember which elly she was, but I think she got better.
Many elephants who get too ill
to perform, or kill the wrong handler are simply taken out in a field, shot,
and buried with a backhoe. There is a vast bone yard out behind the C&B winter
quarters. - Tosti
TIA - The owner of a roadside attraction in Iowa wanted an elephant to give
rides and entertain the public. In May 1991, they purchased Tia and sent her
to an elephant training facility in Wisconsin. Upon arrival, she was led
inside a barn and her legs were shackled. Restrained, she was beaten viciously
with baseball bats and ax handles. Her trainers, not satisfied with the
stinging pain inflicted by standard electric prods, invented their own version
of electrical shock training. They wrapped an electrical cord around an ax
handle. They fastened the exposed wires at one end of the cord to two screws
embedded in the handle and plugged the other end into an electrical outlet.
Each time they pressed the metal screws against her delicate skin, Tia was
jolted with a 110-volt electrical current. Confused and terrified, she
suffered even more injuries every time she struggled to escape or attempted to
defend herself. She remained there for four months.<br> KENNY -
