Phoenix Native Says She Witnessed Elephant Beatings

Phoenix — Holding tools of the circus trade—including a bullhook and a can
of "wonder dust," the gray powder used by trainers to hide bloody bullhook
wounds on elephants—Phoenix native and former Ringling Bros. and Barnum &
Bailey employee Jodey Eliseo will lead a PETA protest outside the U.S.
Airways Center to alert people to the abuse of elephants and other animals
by the circus:
Date: Wednesday, July 5
Time: 6 p.m.
Place: Main entrance to the U.S. Airways Center, 201 E. Jefferson St.
Eliseo, a professional dancer who toured with Ringling Bros., frequently saw
elephants abused with bullhooks during her two years with the circus. She
reports that Ringling handlers beat an elephant for stumbling during a
performance; that a teenage elephant named Sophie was covered with bullhook
wounds as a result of frequent beatings; and that a baby elephant was
severely beaten as punishment for bolting and smashing through a wall at a
civic center.
Ringling has repeatedly failed to meet minimum standards for animal care as
established by the federal Animal Welfare Act. Ringling paid $20,000 to
settle charges of failure to provide veterinary care to a dying baby
elephant and is currently the subject of four investigations by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) for possible violations of the Animal
Welfare Act. The USDA is investigating the death of a 2-year-old African
lion named Clyde, who apparently died of heatstroke while traveling through
the Mojave Desert; the death of an 8-month-old elephant named Riccardo, who
was destroyed after fracturing both hind legs when he fell off a circus
pedestal; an incident in which two young elephants ran amok inside a Puerto
Rico arena; and the excessive use of a steel-tipped bullhook on a chained
7-year-old elephant.
"I chose a hectic, stressful life on the road—the animals didn’t," says
Eliseo. "I saw how animals in the circus are routinely beaten; they live in
constant fear. For them, the circus is a real-life horror show."

John Cuneo owner of Hawthorn Corp. accused by the
USDA of abusing his 16 circus elephants, only a couple days before he was
to surrender his ill and tortured elephants to a sanctuary, has gotten his
lawyers to 'motion' to stop the confiscation!

Cuneo's Ele Tyke on the anniversary of his
death, this is what happens when animals are
abused to the point of attacking their abusive
trainers! The trainer had beat Tyke with a
club type to that has a metal point on the end
behind the curtain just prior to coming out onto
the big top, Tyke came out, turned, and killed
him, in a crazied state he ran out of the circus
onto the streets, where he then was gunned down
in the streets of Hawaii...Tyke was a beloved
elephant in her early 30's. Click

Violently ripped
away from my mothers true love.
I scream and cry for her -but deep I sense her
heart is breaking.
Oh My God! what has happened?
Her comfort never comes ….I do not understand?
I’m placed inside
shackles starved and beaten.
Its been a nightmare endlessly for days.
This can’t be…Please! Why are you so cruel ?
What have I done?
Voices of men rise
all around me
while sharp hooks penetrate my tender skin.
what can I do for you? I would! But please! Help
me to understand?
My mind manages to
stay focused I will try and leave if only I
could.
I know you do not like me ????
Sick and alone my heart weighs so heavy.
Some times you leave
me locked up and alone which seems unbearable
without a
care. Only to return seemingly unhappy with what
I am …but why? I cannot
understand?
The memories of what
was once is now a dream it seems.
Oh no! could it be this terrible pain is the
life doomed for me? Who am I?
At times I seem to
do what you want
but even then you strike again?
I continue to make that painful move in hopes
you will except me.
I know most times by the tone of your voice I
must disappoint you…
Believe me…I just do not understand?
A shower at the end
of a long rubber hose…. oh how I love and
rejoice the cool of the
water! but even then with this one only joy your
hands and glares always move
in anger…. please tell me what have I done?
These crowds of
people scream as I move Are they angry with me
too?
Why? Frightened …I plead… are you so angry with
me?
….What did I possibly do?
Relief or comfort is
never near …It never seams to come.
I try to please…. Confused and bewildered.
I’m patient to learn but please show some care.
… I’m trying to know what you need?
I have learned my
only love is no longer near… her memory so far
away.
Please! I ask for somebody to care… I know
someone once did!
I guess I’m no good really not worthy …you have
told me in so many ways
Please……I just don’t
understand ….what I have or haven’t done?
