Marcella Smith Pit fired Pottery #179 - wheel thrown, 6" tall, Pit fire process used in which the pot is created and fired at a low temperature, then the pot has patina chemicals added then placed in a large pit with saw dust and wood that are brought to a large 'bon-fire', a couple of days later after all has cooled, the pieces are dug out of the deep ashes to reveil there surprise of great beauty. Pit fire pieces are very labor intensive and require much indiviual attention from the creating artist! Because of the irregular temperature and lack of temperature control, many pieces are lost in this process, the surviving pieces become then more precious. Since Pit fire ceramic pieces are hard to make, most ceramic artists do not make them, they are rarer and harder to find then the more common studio pieces. The process does cause expected micro sized cracks which make this piece fragile, but creates a beautiful patina, one of a kind! - "All handmade pottery has some defects, cracks, non-uniform coloring, etc., all of which are seen as part of the charm and desirability of a truly 'made from the hand of the potter' art piece. The shown available pottery created by Marcella Smith, has very little imperfection and is of high quality." Selling price - Original:
